A light on history

At the 1860 Kohimarama conference 200 Maori chiefs pledged their loyalty to the Crown, promising to uphold the Treaty of Waitangi. Twenty months later Rewi Maniapoto's men broke their pledge and took part in the ambush in Taranaki that restarted the war. Rewi's men terrorised the Waikato missionaries and settlers who had gone out of their way to help Waikato develop their land with new plants, building flour mills and finding millers.
